Prescription Drug Plans
Medicare part D
Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage is an optional benefit offered to everyone who has Medicare. If you decide not to get Medicare drug coverage when you’re first eligible, you’ll likely pay a late enrollment penalty if you join later unless you have creditable coverage or Extra Help.
To get Medicare Drug Coverage, you must join a Medicare plan that offers prescription drug coverage. Each plan can vary in cost and drugs offered.
- Medicare Prescription Drug Plan (Part D). These plans, sometimes called PDPs, add drug coverage to Original Medicare.
- Medicare Advantage plans (Part C) or other Medicare Health Plans usually offer prescription drug coverage. You can get all of your Medicare Part A and B, and prescription drug coverage through these plans if it’s offered with the plan.
- Medicare Advantage Plans with prescription drug coverage are sometimes called MAPDs. You must have Part A and B to join a Medicare Advantage Plan. Ask John for help in picking which plan will fit your needs.
